This section is just for the blokes……...

you and your partner have been trying for a baby for more than a year with no success. Perhaps you’ve had a semen analysis carried out, in order to rule out, or rule in, any issues which need to be addressed. You are not alone. Approximately 30% of fertility issues lies with a male factor.

“…men in western countries have less than half the sperm production of their grandfathers at the same age…”
Carlsen E et al “Evidence for decreasing quantity of semen during the past 50 years” British Medical Journal 1992

This can be devastating news as there are generally no symptoms to forewarn you of the problems. This in turn may lead to distress, anger, depression, responsibility, stigma, stress and a strain on your relationship. All of which decreases the chance of a successful conception.

The Good News!

I can reassure you that much can be done to improve male infertility via:

  • orthodox/allopathic medicine
  • diagnostic techniques
  • lifestyle and dietary change

Problems tend to fall into 3 main categories, all of which can be tested:

Structural/Physical - Blockages, obstructions and inflammation or disease.

Hormone Imbalances - Changes in FSH/LH, testosterone, prolactin and thyroid levels.

Sperm Abnormalities - Sperm morphology/motility, ability to fertilise ovum, a and DNA anomalies.

It must be said that men who live a healthy lifestyle are more likely to produce healthy sperm. Consider the following lifestyle choices which can negatively impact upon male fertility:

  • Smoking can significantly decrease both sperm count and sperm cell motility
  • Chronic alcohol abuse
  • Anabolic steroid uses causes testicular shrinkage and infertility
  • Overly intensive exercise produces high levels of adrenal steroid hormones which cause testosterone deficiency resulting in infertility
  • Inadequate vitamin C and Zinc in the diet
  • Tight underwear which increases scrotal temperature resulting in decreased sperm production
  • Too hot baths causes same effect
  • Excessive stress

  • As a fully qualified Reproductive Reflexologist I can offer a positive lifestyle change! Regular reflexology treatments to reduce the stress and its effects in your body thus improving your emotional and physical being. The treatments provide a safe and confidential environment to talk through the problems and give support for you and your partner. Reproflexology can also support you through the challenging and sometimes demanding tests and then continue as pre-conceptual care.
